Why We Love Mint Chocolate Smoothies
Nutrient-Packed: Cauliflower adds a little creaminess and a dose of vitamins and minerals without adding extra sugar or calories.
Refreshing Flavor: Fresh mint leaves boosts the flavor and makes it ultra refreshing. It’s perfect for the warmer months and a great way to kick the day off.
Chocolate Fix: Who doesn’t love a hint of chocolate? Unsweetened cacao or cocoa powder adds that rich, chocolatey flavor that we can’t get enough of. It’s very similar to mint chocolate chip ice cream!
Versatile and Customizable: As we mentioned before smoothies are incredibly versatile, allowing you to tailor it to your preferences, using what you have on hand and can be made fit any lifestyle, such as vegan and dairy free.
Ingredients Needed:
- unsweetened plain almond milk
- fresh mint leaves – adds a punch of freshness that most smoothies don’t have.
- banana – not only do we love the flavor, but if it’s ripe enough it adds natural sweetness.
- frozen cauliflower – using frozen cauliflower keeps from having to add ice and doesn’t water down the smoothie.
- unsweetened cacao or cocoa powder
- honey
How to Make a Mint Chocolate Smoothie
Combine all of the ingredients into a high speed blender and puree until smooth and creamy.
Substitutions and Variations
Milk Options: If almond milk isn’t your preference, feel free to use any other plant-based milk such as oat milk, soy milk, or coconut milk. You can even opt for dairy milk if you prefer.
Sweeteners: While honey adds a lovely touch of sweetness, you can substitute it with maple syrup, agave nectar, or even Medjool dates.
Greens: Add in another serving of veggies by using some spinach or kale. This will change the color more, but doesn’t really affect the taste.
Frozen Veggies: Don’t have frozen cauliflower on hand? No problem! Frozen zucchini or even frozen avocado can provide that creamy texture without altering the flavor.
Protein Boost: Want to make this smoothie more protein packed? Add a scoop of your favorite protein powder or a dollop of Greek yogurt for an extra protein kick. If you use chocolate protein powder, you could probably omit the cacao/cocoa powder.
Toppings: Get creative with toppings! Sprinkle some cocoa nibs, shredded coconut, or chopped nuts on top for added texture and flavor.
Extract: If you don’t have fresh mint leaves, you could opt for peppermint extract instead.
Thicker: For those who like a thicker smoothie or milkshake style, fresh your bananas first, use coconut milk, and maybe add a little ice.
