While normally we reach for panko breadcrumbs when it comes to breading fish and meats, using crushed pecans is a real game changer! Not only does it add a nice crunch, the nuts really add to the overall flavor. I also used this same method to make pecan crusted pork chops, which are another favorite around our house.

Why We Love Halibut

We all know fish and other types of seafood offer a wide variety of nutrition benefits, but here’s just a few reasons why adding halibut to your meal rotation is a great idea.

Rich in Protein: Halibut is a good source of high-quality protein, which is essential for building and repairing tissues in the body.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids: It contains omega-3 fatty acids, particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These fatty acids are known to support heart health and may help reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Vitamin D: Halibut is a natural source of vitamin D, which is important for bone health, immune function, and overall well-being.

Vitamin B12: It is a good source of vitamin B12, which plays a crucial role in nerve function, DNA synthesis, and the formation of red blood cells.

Selenium: Halibut contains selenium, an essential mineral with antioxidant properties that help protect cells from damage.

Low in Saturated Fat: Halibut is relatively low in saturated fat, making it a heart-healthy choice.

Phosphorus: It provides phosphorus, a mineral important for bone health, kidney function, and energy metabolism.

Magnesium: Halibut contains magnesium, which contributes to healthy muscle and nerve function.

Ingredients Needed

  • pecans – we used crushed pecans, you can also use 1 cup of pecan meal.
  • large egg
  • kosher salt and ground black pepper
  • dried thyme
  • Halibut – we used two filets that were about 4 ounces each.
  • Dijon mustard
  • extra-virgin olive oil

How to Make Pecan Crusted Halibut

Line a baking sheet with foil or parchment paper and grease with nonstick cooking spray. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

Add the whole pecans to a food processor and pulse into fine crumbs. Transfer to a plate or place the pecan meal on a plate.

Beat the egg in a small bowl and whisk in the pepper, salt, and thyme.

Coat both sides of the halibut with dijon mustard. Dip each filet into the beaten egg. Then cover each piece of fish with the pecans.

Place the breaded filets on the prepared baking sheets and drizzle with olive oil.

Bake for 12-15 minutes or until cooked through.

Substitutions and Variations

  • Pecan meal – can be used in place of chopped pecans
  • Frozen halibut – if you choose to use frozen fish filets, allow them to thaw completely and remove as much moisture as possible with paper towels. This will ensure they stay crispy through the baking process.
  • Honey mustard – a little sweeter than dijon, but still a delicious choice.
  • Air fryer – you can also make this halibut recipe in the air fryer, but I would reduce the baking time to 8-10 minutes.

How to Store and Reheat

Leftover pecan crusted halibut should be kept in an airtight container, refrigerated, for 4 days. Reheat in the oven or air fryer until warm at 300 degrees.

What to Serve With

White fish recipes go great with just about any side dish. We like to keep it simple and serve it with air fryer broccoli or zucchini
